Big School Advantage. Small School Experience.

    4 Small Schools Within-A-School Coming in 2018-2019!

There was a time when South Mountain High School was the only high school south of the Salt River. Opened in 1953, this Phoenix Union high school has been a centerpiece of the South Phoenix community for decades, establishing itself as a leader in academics, specialized magnet programs, the arts and athletics. Its tradition of producing successful Phoenicians is a testament to the school’s greatness. It is about to become even greater.

Welcome to the future of South Mountain High School & a 21st century learning experience.

South Mountain is being re-imagined into The Academies @ South Mountain, with the creation of four schools-within-a-school, specializing in unique college preparation and career readiness strands. Set to launch in the fall of 2018, the Academies @ South will build upon its successful magnet programs, and add several Career and Technical Education (CTE) opportunities. With input from the community, parents, staff and students, and reflecting uture career opportunity trends, students will select from Science and Technology, Public and Social Service, Aerospace and Engineering or Media, Arts and Design and take elective courses that fall within their chosen academy.

The Academies @ South are designed to meet three objectives: 1) Promote a 21st century learning experience by creating smaller, more personalized learning environments within a chosen academic and career specialty; 2) Increase students’ college and career preparedness; and 3) Increase the number of students who earn professional certifications and dual enrollment college credit. The Academies @ South are sure to attract more students, as well to the 51-acre campus. As the curriculum in each academy takes shape, the school will undergo a $20-million remodeling project over the next three years to establish the distinct academies and to support additional programs and classes associated with each academy. This effort will add to the uniqueness and purity of the four academies, creating a small school feel with the benefits of a large comprehensive high school campus.

Each Academy will have its own administrator, teachers and support staff. Students will take core subjects and academy-specific courses. However, some electives, interscholastic athletics, clubs, band, JROTC and other activities will be offered school-wide, similar to traditional high schools.

Incoming students will chose an academy, and will be enrolled into a class called Academies 1 to conduct extensive research into career fields, understanding key components such as salaries, education required and benefits, among other information.

Business and industry partners and community colleges are important to the Academies, to strengthen pathways to career and college opportunities, through scholarships, internships, dual enrollment, serving on advisory boards and lending expertise and resources to the different fields of study.

The Academies @ South Mountain will be a model for high school education in the future, and a springboard for college and career success for all students.
