Hello!  Welcome to my page!  My name is Johnson Truong, and this is my second year as a math teacher in the Montessori program at Camelback High School.  This is my fifth year as a high school teacher, and I am as excited as ever to work with students.

According to Montessori's philosophy, adolescents yearn for meaning and purpose.  Students will find what they learn rewarding if they are able to see the purpose of learning a topic as well as how it connects to the world they live in and to other areas of learning. Mathematics is a discipline that naturally incites curiosity because of its relevance and connections to the understanding of the natural world, and Montessori education encourages students' curiosity and exploration as they learn math.

Montessori education is holistic, interdisciplinary, and theme-based which allows students to draw connections between different disciplines in their intellectual development.  The role of the instructor is to guide students towards their own learning and to support them in their academic endeavors. Each student is a unique individual with different needs.  Some may prefer traditional whole group lectures as their primary medium of learning.  Some may prefer to work out problems on their own or by studying using textbooks and online resources.  Others may prefer to learn math through hands on projects that draw connections to the world around them.  Regardless of a student's learning style, Montessori education will provide the environment that will support and empower him/her to take charge in his/her own learning. Furthermore, Montessori education also fosters a sense of community and collaboration. "We all do better when we all do better." Oftentimes, students learn as much from one another as they do from the instructor.  For this reason, a safe and supportive community will maximize students' learning.
