Back to School Letter from Mr. Kemp
Dear Phoenix Students,
Happy new school year to you. My name is Eric D. Kemp and I am your proud principal at the Linda Abril Educational Academy. I am humbled and honored to be your principal. It is going to be another incredible year for us at the Academy. Social Venture Partners have invested $5,000 in our school for the third year in a row because they believe in you as much as I do. Like last year our R.I.S.E. and Positive Behavior Intervention System (PBIS) will recognize students for Respectful behavior, showing Initiative, Success, and Excellence in and out of the classroom. We will continue to recognize student achievement and excellent attendance at assemblies every term.
The coolest thing I heard students say last year was “Linda Abril is like a REAL SCHOOL.” That is because Academy students are held to high academic and attendance expectations and were actively engaged in extra-curricular activities. Many of you represented the Academy by participating in off-campus events including Student Government and MeCHA conferences and the Mollen Foundation Food and Fitness Challenge at Alhambra HS where we on won $2,500. Six LAEA students participated in a College and University tour through the states of Texas, Mississippi and Louisiana. Some of you attended the Carl Hayden Valentine Dance. A bunch of you attended Metro Tech’s Prom in Tempe, Arizona. Through the involvement of every student, we voted in the Participatory Budgeting Program and chose to create our own Phoenix Nest Community Recreation room that will have flat-screen televisions, video gaming systems, and a foosball table. There will be many new opportunities for you to engage this year including on campus volleyball and basketball games.
At LAEA we are unitED and dedicated to our core values of commitment, consciousness, courage, creativity, collaboration, and compassion. LAEA is an academy of hope and love where everybody matters and is unitED as a family. You will walk through the front doors very soon and begin the final stages of your K-12 education. Last school year a record one-hundred and seventy-eight students graduated, the largest graduating class in Academy history. My hope for you is that you not only graduate at the soonest possible date but are prepared for success in college, career and life. I expect you to Be committed to your education. Be conscious of the importance of regular attendance. Be courageous and take a stand against bullying. Be creative when finding solutions to roadblocks and obstacles. Be collaborative with teachers and peers. Be compassionate with others. If you live by these six core values, you will not only achieve your academic and personal goals but be a better person.
Know that you will be loved at LAEA. In loco parentis is Latin for “in the place of the parent.” We have compassion, love, and care about you as if you are their own son or daughter. All I ask of you is that you come to school every day and do your very best. Your parents or guardians work hard at their job to see that you have the best they can provide. Your job is to pay them back with good attendance, good grades and a high school diploma. One of the reasons I am so excited is because LAEA is much more than a school building. This is a place of hope and love and I welcome you to join our family. We are unitED at LAEA. I am looking forward to meeting each of you bright and early on the first day of the new term. I will also see all new students for the new student orientation after school. Rise Phoenix Rise!
Sincerely Yours,
Mr. Eric D. Kemp
