    SCHOOL: Camelback High                                                TEACHER: Mr. Sulit

    DEPARTMENT: Science                                                     COURSE TITLE: Chemistry

    CREDIT: 1/2 per semester                                                  GRADE LEVEL: 10, 11, 12

    PREREQUISITES: Biology 1 & 2 and Algebra 1 & 2

    COURSE OVERVIEW:

    Chemistry is the study of all materials that make up our world: their properties, their occurrence, and the changes that take place when their environment is altered. Chemistry is a laboratory-centered course designed to assist students in identifying scientific concepts and principles. Laboratory work is emphasized. Some of the major areas covered during this course are: Scientific Method, Atomic Structure, Physical and Chemical Properties of Matter, Law of Conservation of Matter, Identifying Ionic and Molecular Compounds, Naming Compounds; Types of Chemical Reactions, Writing Balanced Chemical Equations, and Gas Laws. A basic knowledge of Chemistry is useful in cooking, maintaining a healthy fish aquarium, safe use of household cleaning products and the effect of heat on the air pressure in tires.

    MATERIALS REQUIRED:

    The school’s adopted textbook, Chemistry by Glencoe.               8.5” x 11” notebook paper

    A notebook or binder specifically for this course.                         Blue or black pen or #2 pencil.

    Scientific Calculator.                                                                            Highlighter

    ATTENDANCE, TARDIES, MAKING UP ASSIGNMENTS AND LATE WORK:

    The attendance policies and procedures detailed in the Camelback High School Student Handbook will be followed. Success in this class is dependent upon regular attendance. It is doubtful whether any student with ten (10) or more absences, excused or unexcused, during a term will successfully complete this class. Students with an unexcused absence on lab days will not be allowed to make-up the lab. Students with an excused absence may be given alternative assignment to make up the missed lab. All work must be made-up within one (1) week of the date of the absence, except under special circumstances as determined by the teacher. All assignments are to be turned in on the date due. Late assignments may be docked one letter grade for each day beyond the due date. Per PUHSD Governing Board Policy, “Absent” is defined as nonattendance in an assigned class or activity for more than one-half of the period. “Tardy” is defined as not being in the assigned class or activity when the tardy bell has finished ringing.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA:

    Assessment of student performance in this class include but not limited to the following:

    Lectures and class discussion, Class and Homework Assignments, Tests and quizzes, Proper use of laboratory equipment, Laboratory experiments, observation, and data collection, Written lab reports, Student demonstrations and reports.NOT ALL QUIZZES WILL BE ANNOUNCED IN ADVANCE.

    GRADING POLICY:

    Semester grades are determined by using an average of the first term grade, second term grade, Mid-Term exam and the CRT.

    GRADING PROCEDURES:

    Grades in this course are based on a point system. Homework, class work, lab reports, student presentations and reports, tests, and quizzes will be assigned points. The total number of points assigned to each assessment activity will vary based upon the difficulty and importance of the assignment. Homework, class work, and class participation contribute 45% to the term grade. Tests, quizzes, labs, including laboratory reports contribute 40% to the term grade. District Mid-Term and Final Exam contribute 15% to the term grade. Students must earn at least sixty (60) percent to receive credit for this course.

    The grade scale for this course is:

    A = 90 - 100

    B = 80 -  89

    C = 70 -  79

    D = 60 -  69

             F = 59 &  below

    TITLE I PROGRAM:

    Academic tutoring and test preparation is available to all students. Additional support for passing classes and graduating on time is the intent of these services. Support through Title I funding is available in the areas of: math, reading and English.

    OFFICE HOURS AND OUT-OF-CLASS CONFERENCES:

    Students are encouraged to seek assistance during Advisory. Please make an appointment in advance for assistance before school, after school, and during lunch.

    The teacher reserves the right to make exceptions to any of the aforementioned items, as he deems appropriate or necessary.
