Girls GolfCoach Rachel Gonzalez:
Coach Rachel Gonzalez grew up around the golf course. Both her mother and father played in golf leagues. Coach’s brother, Ernie Gonzalez, played on the PGA Tour from 1982 to 1992. Also, Coach’s nephew, Brian Smock, played in the Nationwide Tour/Nike Tour for more than 15 years and is currently the Head Pro at Coronado Golf Course (CA).
Coach Gonzalez’s natural gift for athletics and her exposure to the game, qualified her for her first position in Phoenix Union. In 1997, she was hired at Central High School to coach the Boy’s Golf Team. The following year, PUHSD offered Girl’s Golf and Coach was invited to begin the Girl’s Golf Program at Central HS. Coach Gonzalez was hired at Betty H. Fairfax in 2009. The Girls’ Golf Program has been continuously competitive, winning back-to-back District Championships, a Team State appearance, and several individual appearances, earned by Angel and Alexandra Laughter, respectively. For the 2015-2016 school year, the team is in the rebuilding process, however; 2016-17 another appearance at the State Tournament and again in 2017-18 with Iman Abraham as an individual. Fairfax has won the PUHSD Championship the last two consecutive seasons and looks forward to maintaining this title led by Junior Iman Abraham. Coach Gonzalez is looking forward to another fun season. Coach is a Physical Ed/ Health teacher and also coaches the Varsity Softball Team.
