The World Languages Department offers beginning level through Advanced Placement (AP) courses in Spanish, French, and German. An emphasis is placed on presentational expression (speaking and writing) and on comprehension (reading and listening).

All courses in the contents of Spanish Non-Native, the Spanish for Spanish Speakers, French, and German are aligned with district, state and national curriculum standards. Students are encouraged to take World Languages for college entrance requirements as well as to enrich their academic portfolio and genuine appreciation for diverse cultures.

We now offer two rare language programs at Chávez. Longtime faculty member, Dr. Petra Schmid-Riggins, teaches German, and we are also proud to offer the opportunity for our students to learn Diné! Mr. Alfred Yazzie has brought the Navajo language to Chávez. We are proud to be one of very few high school Diné programs in the state of Arizona!

We have created multiple pathways for different types of post-secondary success. Our students are AP superstars!  We offer successful AP programs for Spanish Language and Culture, French Language and Culture, German Language and Culture, and Spanish Literature and Culture. Students who pass the AP exam become eligible for Arizona's enhancement to their high school diploma: the Arizona Seal of Biliteracy. Dual enrollment for Spanish 5-6 Honors and Spanish Language AP has been available through our collaboration with South Mountain Community College.
