A dedicated team of staff members wearing a face mask and gloves takes Maria's temperature with a non-contact thermometer. They ask Maria to respond to several questions designed to check for symptoms and/or exposure.

Maria sits in her first period class
8:55-10:27 am
Maria wears her face mask and follows physical guides in the hallway. If needed, she waits six feet apart from her peers in line to enter the building and/or classroom. Doors are propped open so Maria does not have to touch the doorknob.
The classroom will have been cleaned and sanitized the previous night using proper protocols, including desks, chairs, and high touch areas.
Maria sits at her desk. The nearest classmate sits 6 ft away. The number of students sitting in the classroom is determined by 6 ft distancing guidelines and square footage.
Maria logs into her school laptop and engages with her teacher and classmates online in Microsoft Teams. She raises her hand, asks questions, participates in discussions and activities in the online environment so that the teacher, in-person students, and virtual students may see and hear one another and engage in learning together. Maria may receive support from her teacher during asynchronous learning time where students are working independently by themselves or in a group.
The teacher ends class a few moments early and works with students to use a disinfectant spray or wipes, proven to eliminate COVID-19 virus, to clean the desk and chair that they used during class.
Maria exits from the classroom adhering to six feet spacing between her and her classmates. If needed, the teacher will quickly stagger dismissal to assist with distancing. Once in the hallway, Maria will follow physical guides to her next class.

Common What If Questions
What if Maria fails the health screening or experiences/displays COVID symptoms at any time during the day?
A dedicated staff member walks Maria to one of two isolated rooms, a cooling area where she can retake her temperature and/or a waiting room, where Maria waits until a parent can pick her up. If a parent/guardian is unable to pick her up then alternate arrangements are made. She is supervised during this time. Standard COVID-19 protocols will determine the next steps regarding recommended testing, contact tracing, student/staff/parent notification, and quarantine. What if Maria does not feel well while riding the PXU bus?
Maria does not participate in a temperature check or health screening prior to boarding the bus. If she does not feel well after arriving at the bus stop or after she boards the bus, she continues to ride the bus and participates in the required temperature check and health screening at the campus entrance. If she fails the health screening or is experiencing COVID symptoms, a dedicated staff member walks Maria to one of the two dedicated waiting rooms, and the standard COVID-19 protocols are enacted, including the appropriate notification of students and staff that were on the bus. What if Maria forgets or refuses to wear a face mask?
If Maria forgets her face mask, one will be provided to her at the campus entrance. If she loses her face mask while on campus a disposable mask will be provided to her.If Maria refuses to wear a face mask, she will be immediately directed to meet with a designated staff member to determine the reason and an appropriate solution will be put in place that will protect the health and safety of all students and staff. If Maria is unable to wear a face mask on a regular basis she will be transitioned back to remote learning at her home campus and/or encouraged to enroll at PXU Digital Academy.
What if Maria rides the Valley Metro bus?
Valley Metro has established health and safety protocols for their ridership. For more information, visit the Valley Metro website. Campuses will remind students of the importance of 6 ft distancing at bus and light rail stops. PXU will also collaborate with Valley Metro on the bus route schedule to best support school arrival and dismissal.
