    Alhambra High School           Ms. Jacobs     Art 1-2      Fine Art

    1 Credit       Grades 9-12        No prerequisites required

    Course Description:

    Art 1-2 is an exploratory course covering a variety of  art techniques including(but not limited to): drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, ceramics, jewelry design, textile design, and many other two and three dimensional art experiences that will require the exploration of a wide selection of materials, tools, media, and techniques. This will provide the students with a broad overview of the art making opportunities they may enjoy and the potential careers that they may be interested in as a result of these experiences. A major emphasis will be on the use of the elements of art, the principles of design, color theory, aesthetics, and criticism. These concepts will be cultivated  through art history, cultural studies,  art production, and art evaluation, as they relate to various problems(cultural, social, economic, political, philosophical, environmental, etc.).

    Materials Required:

    Art 1-2 is a studio lab class that uses a wide variety of tools, materials, and equipment which will be provided by the school through the students supply fee. The student fee is 20.00 per semester, and is to be paid in the student bookstore.

    Grading System:

    The students will be graded on four areas of class work. Create, relate, participate, and CRT(tests). Create is 50% and includes all aspects of art production.

    Relate is 25% and includes planning, research, artist statements, and writing assignments.

    Participate is 15% and includes attendance, bell work, homework,  and active involvement in discussions and activities. Students must attend class daily. Art 1-2 is a studio lab class and many projects cannot be done at home. Multiple absences will affect the students grade adversely.

    CRT(tests)  is 10% and includes self evaluations, quizzes, pre-tests, post-tests, and portfolios.

    Students must be present on examination days for the District CRT(Criterion Reference Test) testing in order to receive class credit, unless prior arrangements have been made with the principal’s office or instructor is contacted by the examination date, by the parent or guardian.

    There will be extra credit opportunities up to 1% of the student’s total grade.

    Students work will be graded using rubrics. The rubrics will be based on the students ability to follow specific directions related to the project, the students ability to use the elements of art, the principles of design, and color theory within the composition, originality, craftsmanship, effort, neatness of finished product and presentation.

    Students are responsible for making up missing work due to excused or unexcused absences, lack of effort, and poor time management. Excused absences allow students time to turn in work without penalty. All other incomplete work/late work is accepted with penalty that increases with length of time late.

    Grading:

    A=100%-90%

    B=89%-80%

    C=79%-70%

    D=69%-60%

    F=59% and below

    Attendance:

    Student attendance is crucial to academic success. Students are counted absent if they are not in class for more than one-half of the class period. Phoenix Union High School District believes that daily participation in classroom instructional activities is essential to learning and and necessary for earning credit in every course. Students may fail the class for the semester in any course, when reaching a total of 12 excused/unexcused absences and after  school documented interventions have been exhausted.

    When students have been absent, it is their responsibility to discuss how to make up assignments with the teacher, before or after school. art 1-2 is a lab class, which requires in class participation and for most projects to be done in class with special tools, materials, and equipment and will require the student to come into the art studio to make up the work, in many cases.
