Mrs. Kunes was born in Chicago, Illinois and raised in Glendale, Arizona. She earned a B.A. (Summa Cum Laude) in Spanish from Northern Arizona University where she was a Resident Assistant. Mrs. Kunes obtained scholarships to study in Cuernavaca, Morelos, Mexico and Salamanca, Spain. Mrs. Kunes has been a teacher and a coach for 30 years in the Glendale Elementary and Phoenix Union High School Districts. She coached basketball, volleyball, and softball and has taught English and ELD, Spanish including Dual Enrollment, P.E., Dance, AVID, and Computer Principles. Mrs. Kunes is married to Jeff, an Art Teacher and Football Coach. Mr. and Mrs. Kunes both teach at Betty H. Fairfax High School in Laveen, Arizona, where their sons are involved in athletics and performing arts. Mrs. Debbie Kunes has had the joy of working with over 3500 young scholars.

Welcome to my class! I look forward to a great year, and I hope you do too.
We will be using many resources for our projects and learning in this class over the course of the year.
Some additional materials that you will need every day in class are:
- Writing Utensils (pen, pencil, eraser, highlighter)
I also expect students to make sure their ID is VISIBLE when we return to campus. I will follow the school ID policy when students are not wearing their ID.
In this class, your grades are based on your mastery of each standard assessed in the classes.
Your grade will be calculated as follows:
Your semester coursework will be worth 90% of your final semester grade and the final exam will be worth 10% of your final semester grade. We will use a rubric-based grading scale as follows:

Title I Program:
Academic tutoring and test preparation are available to all students. Additional support for passing classes and graduating on time is the intent of these services. Support through Title I funding is available in the areas of math, reading and English. It is imperative that all missing assignments be made up, as each assignment is an opportunity for the student to demonstrate proficiency in the standard. If there is not sufficient evidence to evaluate a student’s proficiency in the standard, the student is in jeopardy of failing. Assignments will be assigned from time to time as homework (to be completed at home). These assignments are due as assigned.
Students who participate in activities/sports which require eligibility will be closely monitored. I will follow the District Policy. If you are declared ineligible, you must come complete required work after school and, if necessary, to have your release to play/participate signed by me.
“Absent” is defined as nonattendance in an assigned class or activity for more than one-half of the period. (PXU Governing Board Policy J-1561 JHR)
“Tardy” is defined as not being in the assigned class or activity when the tardy bell has finished ringing. (PXU) Governing Board Policy J-1561 JHR)
Students may fail the class for the semester in any course, when reaching a total of 6 excused/unexcused absences and after school-documented interventions have been exhausted. (See Student Procedures Handbook)
Being late to class interrupts learning. You need to be in your seat with your materials before the tardy bell rings. The school tardy policy will be followed. (Student Planner)
You may do those things that promote your learning and the learning of others. You cannot violate the right of another person. Please remember that you and your classmates have a right to a safe environment in which you can learn.
Consequences of misbehavior or falling behind in your class work may include: parent phone calls/conferences, after school detention and/or administrative referrals. The following procedures will help you be successful:

- Complete all course work
- Make up all missing assignments
