Spread Love, Not COVID: Student Edition

  • Phoenix Union and Partner Districts to Offer Three Youth Vaccination Events This Summer

PHOENIX, AZ – The Phoenix Union High School District (PXU) and its 13 partner elementary school districts will provide three opportunities this summer for all individuals 12 years of age and older to receive the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine. In partnership with the Maricopa County Department of Public Health, Albertsons/Safeway, and Native Health, 15 schools will host vaccination Points of Dispensing (PODs) to serve the entire PXU footprint, including private and charter school students and families. The Safeway Foundation, UnitedHealthCare Community Plan, Feed the Children, Homeless Youth Connection, and other trusted community partners will provide additional resources and services.

“Our ongoing efforts to provide vaccination PODs stems from our collective desire to serve our entire community,” said PXU Superintendent Dr. Chad Gestson. “The zip codes we serve have been some of the hardest hit in the nation by COVID-19 and some of the slowest to receive vaccine supply. It is our goal to provide continued access to this vital resource.”

The first Spread Love, Not COVID: Student Edition vaccination event will take place on Friday, June 11 and Saturday, June 12. Exact times will be determined based on demand. All individuals 12 years of age and older are encouraged to attend and can register in advance or simply walk in without an appointment. In addition, food boxes and other resources, such as feminine hygiene products, will be distributed during the event at no cost.

The same locations will reopen on Friday, July 9 and Saturday, July 10 to offer first and second doses of the Pfizer vaccine.  During this event, all school-aged children will receive a free backpack and school supplies, while supplies last.  All backpacks and school supplies were procured thanks to a $50,000 donation from UnitedHealthCare Community Plan.

As a culminating event, a third opportunity to receive the Pfizer vaccine will take place on Friday, July 30 and Saturday, July 31. Initial plans are being developed to offer sports physicals, dental screenings, health check-ups, and other vaccines during this time. More details will be shared later this summer.

We would like to thank all of our staff, our volunteers, as well as our health and community partners for their support in making these events possible.
